People were not happy how fast I went through the first hundred fighters and showed no signs of slowing down… But that was only because I was an exceptionally good actress. I was glad when the refs actually called a real pause to switch out, and people were going to get concessions along with some promo stuff for the sponsors to play in the livestream.

Wait—what? We had sponsors?

Avril and Ellen practically snorted at me when I asked that. Not only was my luxury resort chain one, the hobgoblin businesses were too, and several others I’d backed. They were doing the same when I needed it.

Nice.

Dean White was there wearing a glamour and stopped me when I went to reach for the box of crystals. “You’re using your energy in a way you don’t need to to do this. Trust someone else to.”

“She was worried someone else could sense our magic with so many others watching us this closely,” Stefanie explained, thanking Dean White when she wrote a healing rune on me.

“We’re winging a lot given how many extras came on last minute to fuck with me,” I reminded everyone, glancing at White. “Which is why I guess you risked being here around your elders, because it’s stupid for you to be here and not protected at Artemis. They try for you enough there, but this is a bunch of crazy—”

Julian storming into the locker room interrupted me. He wasn’t going to be seen as part of this either and get himself in anymore trouble with his elders or on the radar or people, so I was surprised to meet him down there.

Even more so when he yanked me against him and kissed me with all he had. He turned us so his back was to the others and I was mostly blocked and kept kissing me in a way that was passionate and possessive. Something he generally was not.

Huh?

“I’m sorry,” he panted when I moved my hands to his chest and gave him a gentle shove. “I’m so fucking sorry, love, but I’m losing my mind. I can’t—how you deal with this all the time is unreal. I never understood. I thought I did, but this is—it’s—this is a curse, and I’m so sorry you deal with this.”

“I have no idea what you are talking about,” I whispered, searching his eyes and scared when I saw fear there.

“Oh dear,” a light fairy sighed as he moved closer. “I’m sorry to interject and be so nosy, but we could all sense his extreme upset and fear. You do not need to be scared, young Craftsman. We will teach you control as your mate has learned.”

I put two and three together and came up with something that shouldn’t have been possible. “You’re hearing thoughts? That’s what I call a curse.”

Julian nodded. “Something happened. I was reading some of what’s being said online and got too pissed, and my magic gathered for a fight and suddenly…”

I hugged him, turning on my own telepathy and listening to him, asking him in his mind to show me.
